Ride Overview

The Western Slopes trail system at Massanutten Resort has developed into one of the most impressive purpose-built mountain bike networks in the Shenandoah Valley, thanks largely to the efforts of the Shenandoah Valley Bicycle Coalition (SVBC).

These trails were not included in my earlier guidebooks because they are located on private property and require a paid pass to access — a requirement that remains in place today. That said, the quality, variety, and scale of the riding here more than justify the cost for riders looking for a destination-style experience.

Often referred to locally as “the Nutt,” the Western Slopes offer more than 30 miles of diverse terrain, ranging from smooth gravel connectors and flowing singletrack to fast, technical descents that will challenge advanced riders. It’s a thoughtfully designed system that truly offers something for nearly every skill level.

Clear trail signage makes navigating the Western Slopes straightforward. A comprehensive trail map is available through the Shenandoah Valley Bicycle Coalition.

Ride Details at a Glance

Ride Time: 1.5–3 hours, depending on route selection and pace
Ride Type: Mountain Bike

Ride Notes: The Western Slopes trail system has something for nearly everyone, but the route highlighted here serves as an excellent introduction rather than a full tour. This loop was selected to showcase the system’s variety, including smooth rolling singletrack, short technical sections, sustained climbs, and access to several scenic viewpoints.

What this route intentionally avoids are some of the resort’s more technical, expert-level downhill trails, which are commonly accessed via shuttle. Riders interested in those trails should contact the resort directly for current access details. Take Aim Cycling operates shuttle services at Massanutten and other nearby areas within the George Washington National Forest.

Access Requirement:
Because the trails are located on private property, riders must purchase either a Day Pass or an Annual Pass from Massanutten Resort to ride the Western Slopes.

This loop serves as an introduction to the Western Slopes trail system and can be extended by exploring additional cross-country and downhill trails throughout the network. Ongoing trail development and maintenance at Massanutten continue to expand riding options and improve connectivity across the resort.
