Ride Overview
As with many modern trail systems, Bacon Ridge exists thanks to the dedication of an army of volunteers — though it often takes one individual to lead the charge. The trails at Bacon Ridge were in development for years, but it wasn’t until local resident and Trailwerks shop owner Michael Klasmeier became involved that the project gained momentum and ultimately became the destination it is today.
Bacon Ridge features approximately 20 miles of narrow, flow-focused singletrack designed to satisfy demanding mountain bikers while remaining approachable for newer riders. The system includes a dedicated jump line with multiple options, allowing both beginner and advanced riders to progress at their own pace.
Informational signage marks the entrance to Bacon Ridge’s progressive jump line.
Ride Details at a Glance
Location: Crownsville, MD
Length: ~20 Miles
Ride Time: Up to 4 hours, depending on route selection
Ride Type: Mountain Bike
Difficulty: Level 3/Intermediate
Ride Notes: While Bacon Ridge is suitable for riders of all skill levels, the trails can be physically demanding. Punchy climbs, sustained pedaling, and unavoidable technical features contribute to the Level 3 rating. For beginner and intermediate riders, Bacon Ridge is an ideal place to build endurance, refine bike handling skills, and explore more advanced trail features in a well-designed and supportive environment.
Riders can easily extend a Bacon Ridge outing by incorporating trails at the nearby Annapolis Waterworks property, creating longer loops that combine additional singletrack and flow-style riding. This connectivity makes Bacon Ridge a flexible destination, suitable for both shorter sessions and extended rides.
Bacon Ridge was still under development when my Maryland book went to print, which is why it does not appear in any of my published guides. The loop presented here is from a mid-2023 ride with the trail system’s primary architect and highlights all major areas of the network. Ongoing advocacy and planning efforts continue in the area, with the potential for future trail expansion and improved connections that would further enhance Bacon Ridge as a regional riding destination.
