Frozen Laurel Hill

Despite the cold temperatures, I managed to get out for a short spin through the frozen landscape at Laurel Hill Park.

Late last month, Northern Virginia — along with much of the Mid-Atlantic — was hit by a major winter storm that dumped several inches of snow, followed by a thick layer of sleet. The result was a surface as hard as concrete, often dubbed snowcrete — perfect riding conditions if you have studded tires.

Thankfully, I did.

Just getting started, heading towards the Barrel Bridge.

That made it possible to stay close to home and get back onto the trails at Laurel Hill for at least one more proper winter outing. Below are a few images from today’s ride, capturing the quiet, surreal feel of the frozen landscape.

I wanted to squeeze in one last lap before the thaw sets in and take advantage of my 45NRTH Wrathchild tires at least one more time this season. I’m hoping the cold hangs on just long enough for another ride like this.

I capped things off with a quick stop at Bunnyman Brewing, just down the street — because Bikes + Beer = :-)
