Ride Overview
The Southern Traverse is one of IMBA’s designated Epic Rides and offers several possible configurations, including a loop, a point-to-point shuttle, or an out-and-back. My strong recommendation is to ride it as a point-to-point, starting at the Confederate Breastworks along the Highland Turnpike (Route 250) and finishing at the trailhead along Route 627.
If you choose to ride this route as an out-and-back, park at the Route 627 trailhead and head north toward Jerkemtight Junction, turning around at approximately the 15-mile mark. I would not recommend venturing beyond that point in an out-and-back configuration.
The Southern Traverse lies deep in what local Harrisonburg riders refer to as the “backcountry.” This is a ride that requires absolute commitment. Once you reach the ridge, there are no easy exit points and no reliable cell service. Even experienced riders should avoid attempting this ride solo.
Timing matters. Early to mid-fall is ideal, when vegetation has begun to die back but before leaf cover becomes excessive. Due to the trail’s remoteness, maintenance is difficult, and riders should expect overgrown sections, downed trees, and frequent natural obstacles along the corridor.

Ride Notes: I won’t sugarcoat it — the Southern Traverse is one of the most demanding rides you’ll encounter in the region. The route features sustained climbing (including steep hike-a-bike sections), narrow and exposed singletrack, and virtually no bailout options. Any exits that do exist are nearly as challenging as the trail itself.
Completing the Southern Traverse is a major accomplishment and one that demands physical fitness, strong technical skills, solid navigation, and sound judgment. Riders should carry adequate food, water, tools, and be prepared for a full day in remote terrain.
The Southern Traverse is included as an honorable mention in Mountain Biking Virginia. The version described in the book covers the loop option, while the route maps below include the point-to-point configuration recommended here.
I recently rode the Southern Traverse with a group of friends. A full ride report, including photos and notes on conditions, is available on the blog.
