The design drew considerable objections because it was not open to competition; protesters opposing its construction chained themselves to cherry trees along the Tidal Basin, and Jefferson himself (that is his bronze statue) didn’t make it under the dome until 4 years after the memorial was dedicated on April 13, 1943.
